Future Improvements at West Detention Pond
July 14, 2026
Fort Bend County Municipal Utility District No. 151 (the "District") is excited to announce a series of major recreational infrastructure expansions at the West Detention Pond, located off West Firethorne Road.
While the drainage channel primarily serves as a critical component of our community’s stormwater management system, the District is advancing plans to maximize the perimeter layout for resident use and outdoor recreation. The comprehensive project features three (3) main components designed to elevate community recreation and accessibility.
1. New Pedestrian Bridge Connection & Trail Extension
Currently, the walking trail around the West Detention Pond ends abruptly, preventing a continuous walk or run around the drainage channel. To resolve this, the District will construct a trail continuation that links directly to a new pedestrian bridge crossing. This addition will create a complete trail loop, allowing walkers, runners, and families to cross the detention pond safely while staying away from the main road.
2. Community Disc Golf Course
To provide a accessible, low-impact outdoor activity for residents of all ages, a brand-new multi-hole disc golf course is being constructed around the perimeter of the pond. Phase 1 design layouts include professional tee pads, baskets, and dedicated tee signage interspersed naturally along the greenway trails and existing vegetation.

3. Dedicated Parking Lot & Pavilion Infrastructure
To accommodate the increased utilization of these park elements and ensure comfortable access for all Firethorne neighbors, a brand-new 39-space parking lot will be constructed alongside West Firethorne Road. Immediately adjacent to the entry, the District is establishing a major gathering hub featuring:
A community pavilion structure
A shaded picnic grove and integrated seatwall
An open plaza equipped with public outdoor fitness equipment
Beautiful canopy and ornamental tree landscaping beds

Engineering Status Update: The District's architectural and engineering teams have completed initial site renderings and master plan designs. The project is moving through the requisite drainage volume optimization and county permitting reviews, and we look forward to providing further scheduling updates as final construction clearance approaches.
